It's Not The Turkey's Fault

I've always heard that turkey makes you sleepy.  And that is why everyone gets sleepy after the Thanksgiving feast.  It's the tryptophan in the turkey's fault.

These kids here.......

They didn't even eat the turkey.
They ate the ham.

So what's up with the napping?

My kids NEVER nap in the car anymore.
And they were 3 for 3 on the way home from our Thanksgiving lunch.

I don't get it.
It's not the turkey's fault.

It must be some sort of conspiracy against the turkey.

I bet the pig is behind it all.

It's Expected, But So True.....

It's no surprise that....

I am most thankful for him.....

and him.......

and him.............

And almost 18 years of moments like this.....
with him.
May God bless you this Thanksgiving.

Knots On A Counting Rope

Carter's first grade class celebrated Thanksgiving today at school.  Instead of just making the traditional handprint turkey, the class celebrated in a special way.  They made "Stone Soup" together by recreating the recipe from the book Stone Soup.  Each child brought something in to help with the meal. Then, they got to enjoy eating it after it cooked all day.

But the real treat to me today was the class story time.

Mrs. Posey had asked Carter and his Pop, my Daddy, to read a story to the class.  She wanted them to read the story, Knots on a Counting Rope.

The story is written as a conversation between a young Native American boy and his grandfather.  The boy is asking his grandfather to tell him the stories from his birth and childhood.  The boy keeps interrupting with parts of the story, because the boy already knows the stories by heart.

Each time the story is told, the grandfather ties a knot in the counting rope.  The story goes, that when the rope is full, that he won't tell the stories anymore.  The story hints at the reality of human mortality.

When I saw the way Carter looked up at him, I had to swallow hard at this part of the story.  I'm glad Carter's grandfather has a long rope.

Don't Forget The Little Things

My kindergarteners did an art project today.  Since Thanksgiving is coming up, I decided that we would make these adorable little turkeys to hang in the hallway.
I asked each child what they were the most thankful for.  I got quite an array of answers, just as I expected.  What did surprise me, though, was that most of the kids were thankful for the little things in life.

One child was thankful for strawberries.
One gave a shoutout to monkeys.
One expressed his love for books.
And then there was the child who was most thankful for bunnies....the mommy bunnies that have soft little babies.

I want to be more mindful of the little things.

In the upcoming weeks before Thanksgiving...when you are in the midst of thankful thinking.....don't overlook the small stuff.

There is no blessing too small to name and give recognition to.

Thankful Thinking

During the month of November, everyone starts to really ponder what they are thankful for. I am no different. Although, I try to count my blessings each day and recognize all that I have been blessed with. November just has that thankful spirit about it. This year at Thanksgiving, I sat at "The Big Table" in three different homes. My Granny's, Bradley's Grandma's and Bradley's Nanny's. It seems that almost all families have this hallowed tradition of banishing the children to a separate table while the adults eat together. As a child, I did not understand this tradition. I was even confused by it and maybe even a little annoyed. I also coudn't understand why it took the grownups so dang long to eat their lunch. Did they have trouble chewing? Is digestion a problem when you are old? I didn't know. Now that I am a rightful sitter of the "Big Table", I get it. You send the kids to the little table because you want to eat in peace. You want to enjoy the comraderie of other adults. You want to be thankful that you have kids, but that they are in the other room. And, just as my parents did, I sit for hours around the table eating. It's not that it takes a long time to eat, it's just nice to sit and talk. At my Granny's house, I remember, not only sitting at the little table, but also drinking out of the little glasses. The adults got the tall glasses brimming with Granny's yummy sweet tea, while the kids got these short, squat glasses with a handle. I recall the first year I was given a glass without a handle. My cousins and I still joke about that tradition to this day, at the "Big Table" of course.

This Thanksgiving I have so much to be thankful for. I would fill up my entire blog page if I tried to list them all. Top on my lists would definitely be my family and my church with friends coming in right behind. For a different twist, though. I will make some different kinds of Thankful lists.
